Cultural Heritage Unit

A cultural heritage unit has been realised within the project  administration office. Information on cultural heritage values has been provided to 50 school children (3 school classes) in St. Katherine city. The cultural heritage unit has purchased information booklets and posters mainly aimed at childrens’ education. Thirty local people (1.15) were trained in organising awareness campaigns. Fifty school children were selected and have received training in preparation of promotional materials.

Awareness campaigns provided health education for mothers and their children on the proper diet and food contaminations that threaten their health.

The following competition in art and bio-diversity (organisms living in the protectorate) were held:
- Harmful effects of smoking
- Environmental camp on sustainability and bio-diversity and natural balance
- Birds flu
- Environmental day
- Carbon reduction
- Food contamination
- Water pollution
- Environmental rights

In addition three booklets were produced by the unit they were:
1- Women rights in Sinai
2- Food contamination by mycotoxins and their effects on human health.
3- Simplified and useful in the healthy regulated food.

Clinical Examination Unit

The clinical examination laboratory (CEL) were established and equipped. The average number of patients served was 42 per month. A temporary operational license was obtained from the Ministry of Health. The request to obtain a permanent operational license has been submitted to Ministry of Health.
The patients’ database recorded 307 patients (53% more than planned)

Mobile Veterinary unit

The mobile veterinary unit successfully provided the planned veterinary services (regular check-ups and provision of medicines whenever deemed needed), to the husbandry communities in St. Katherine Protectorate. The area in which services were provided covers the city of St. Katherine and it’s the Wadies in St. Katherine Protectorate, namely; El-Sheikh Awad, Wadi Gharba, Wadi Zaghra, Upper Nasb, Lower Nasb, El-Raba, El Eskofia, El-Rasses, El-Ras-El Asfar, Abu Madi, Wadi Sulaf, El-Hamani, El-Makhlafa, El-Marwa, El-Maedaa, El-Sheikh Mohsen, El-Mekqaa, El-Gherei, El-Noemana, El-Nasra, Wadi Sedod, Wadi El-Arbaein, El-Zayitona, El Ramtha, Abu Seila, El-Shamia and Upper Asbaieya.

By the end of the project 127 on February 2009, the Mobile Veterinary Health Care Vehicle (MVHCV) treated a total numbers of 4570 animal heads as follows:
- 356 camels
- 1348 sheep
- 2866 goats and a token hen was also treated
Percentage of actual achieved results over planned results was 182%.

Water Quality Unit

The operation of the planned water desalination and disinfection unit has been established near Al-Zayitona well. The purification station uses 5 techniques for water desalination and disinfection;
o Sedimentation bath with alum
o Sand filter
o Ultraviolet based desalination
o Chlorination
o Ozone production.
Those techniques are considered sufficient for water desalination and disinfection.
However, the unit's operation met problems. The analysis of the produced water, done by the Directorate of Health in El Tur, showed that its quality is apparently insufficient. A request for legal operation of the unit has been sent to the Ministry of Health but to date no reply has been received by the project management. The water purification component has been suspended until obtaining technique licence from Ministry of Health. In general, The project was not able to implement the planned activities. 

Mushroom Production Unit

The mushroom production unit has been established within the project 127 administration office. 103 local Bedouin women attended 6 training courses in mushroom cultivation. Thirteen women have started a mushroom cultivation plots. The mushrooms produced are delivered to the project and the latter arranges their sales on behalf of the women. Further training courses was held in July 2008 in St. Katherine City, on "Mushroom and biocide production". Organised and presented to Agriculture Directorate staff, thirteen students from Cairo University, Faculty of Science attended the training course. A total of 200 people were trained in mushroom cultivation.

In addition "Mushroom fundamentals" booklet was produced by the unit .
